Civil Partnerships
Since the end of 2005
Civil Partnerships became legal relationships for same sex couples. For the purpose of making a will and inheritance tax the
Civil Partnership is treated just the same as marriage. If you are in a
Civil partnership and you or you and your partner would like to make a will then please call us.
If you enter into a
Civil Partnership any previous will that you wrote will be revoked, just as a marriage would revoke an old will, unless the original will had specific instruction that it should not be revoked by the
civil partnership.
If you divorce your
civil partner, this would NOT automatically revoke your will, as in a divorce for a hetrosexual couple, if you were to die your will would be read as though your divorced partner had pre-deceased you.
In summary a
Civil Partnership is as significant as marriage, any changes to the partnership would mean to need to update your Will.
