History of Abbey Wood Abbey Wood is a town in southeast London close to Greenwich and Bexley. The town is so called on behalf of the nearby Abbey of St Mary and St Thomas the Martyr at Lesnes, which was founded in 1178.
The Abbey Wood railway station was opened in 1849 to the north of the town and around a century later, London County Council built the Abbey Estate on marshland, south of the railway. The Estate boasted many amenities and was first used to accommodate families from the East End of London.
Further building work took place in the 1970s by Greater London Council, who built Thamesmead, just north of the station.
Family oriented, the town has a number of parks and sporting grounds for children and adults of all ages.
Abbey Wood now has a population of just over 13,000 and further railway plans means that the town is set to expand considerably over the next ten years.
