History of Ackworth

Ackworth; is a small town in the borough of Wakefield, West Yorkshire and is situated between Pontefract Barnsley and Doncaster on the river went.
The first Christian church was erected in Ackworth between 700-800. Local tradition tells us that the monks of  Lindisfarne brought the body of St Cuthbert with them to Ackworth as they fled the depredations of Danish Vikings.
 

Ackworth is home to Ackworth School, one of the older schools in Britain. A Quaker boarding and day school for ages two to eighteen, it was founded in 1779. The local primary schools are Ackworth Howard (CE) School, in Low Ackworth, and Bell Lane and Mill Dam Schools, in Moortop.
