History

The true site of top British comedy "Only Fools and Horses", Acton, based in west London, has a population of around 60,000 inhabitants.

Mentioned in the Domesday Book, Acton was originally a farm surrounded by oak trees.  Now, it is the main route between London and Oxford, attracting a great deal of traffic and commuters.

Towards the end of the 17th century, Acton was well known for its health spas and laundries, catering for hotels and the well heeled throughout London´s West End.

Throughout the 20th century, Acton was considered to be a major industrial town, employing thousands of people in the vehicle and manufacturing industries.  Indicative of the British economy, most of these plants have now gone and Acton is a principally residential area.

There is some considerable regeneration taking place in the town, with the "Mount" on the High Street having been recently refurbished and a considerable number of houses on estates being demolished with new ones taking their place.
There are seven railway stations situated throughout the town, four of these acting as London Underground stations.  An additional tram line was proposed several years ago by Ken Livingstone, to run through Acton, connecting Shepherd´s Bush and Uxbridge.  However, this plan was scrapped in favour of an alternative railway network.
