History of Brentwood
To historians the town of Brentwood is unclear. An early Bronze Age axe was found however it is beleived unlikely that there were any early settlements. More likely the axe was dropped in the forests of Essex.
The ancient Great Roman road runs through Brentwood but again historians believe it is unlikely the Romans settled here.
The name Brentwood is actually a combination of an alternate form of the word 'burnt' and 'wood', thus indicating an early settlement in a woodland clearing. It is therefore believed that the Brentwood settlement was established around 1170 when people from the north travelled to worship the shrine of Thomas a Beckett.
