Once the home of songstress Kate Bush, Brockley is a suburb situated in south London.
Principally covered with agricultural land until the mid 1800s, Brockley was renowned for its market gardens, some of which are still in existence today.
The London & Croydon railway runs through Brockley, across a track originally the site of the Croydon canal.
Much of the town of Brockley was developed in the late 1800s by the Tyrwhitt-Drake family, who constructed a number of large houses which were often the principal dwellings of factory owners.
Brockley suffered considerable damage during World War II and in the 1950s, as the larger houses were divided into smaller dwellings, they became home to a number of immigrants, particularly from Jamaica.
In recent times, as with many parts of London, the town has become popular with professional commuters. Development is continuing, although this is being restricted by conservation groups.
