Camberwell, in south London, is thought to date back to a period before the eleventh century, appearing in the Domesday Book. At that time, due to the many wells and springs in the area which were thought to have healing powers, it may be that a good number of people suffering from leprosy were forced to live in this area, rejected from the city of London itself – only around a 15 minute journey away.
The town, like many others in London, fell heavily to the plague in the seventeenth century, and around 100 inhabitants died from this disease in 1665.
With the installation of rail links in the 1860s, Camberwell became very popular and today, it is very much an urban area, with a mixture of Georgian houses and high rise flats.
The home of King’s College Hospital, Camberwell is now a thriving community for young professionals with a good number of pubs, bars and restaurants.
