History of Canary Wharf

One of the two main corporate centres of London, Canary Wharf is situated in the  borough of Tower Hamlets and is home to the headquarters of many banks, professional services firms and international businesses, with around 90,000 employees working here.

The largest building in Canary Wharf is One Canada Square, a well recognised UK landmark, with its beacon of light flashing from its tower.  This building was, until recently, the highest in the UK.

The West India Docks, around which Canary Wharf was constructed, was once thought to be the busiest port in the world.  Unfortunately, with the decline of such traditional trade, the docks were finally closed in 1980. 

Dominated by futuristic high rise apartment blocks and office skyscrapers, the architecture at Canary Wharf is in direct contrast to the more historical feel of the city itself.  Indeed, there has been much rivalry and conflict between the city and Canary Wharf, with regards to attracting both businesses and tenants.
