Situated in south London, the origins of the name of the town of Catford are unknown. However, it is thought that the area, which dates back to the thirteenth century, was so named as a result of the cattle which crossed the River Ravensbourne here or was the name of the manor house, which stood on the site during this period.
Originally, Catford was an area of forest and agricultural land, which was prone to heavy flooding and there was a mill here, which is recorded in the Domesday Book. Unfortunately, there are no remaining signs of the town prior to the late nineteenth century and the town as we know it today is principally modern and built up.
One of the principal attractions of the town, its greyhound racing stadium, was closed down in 2003.
The main focus of Catford is now its shopping centre, symbolised by the giant black and white cat, draped over the entrance sign. The centre of the town itself has been identified as ripe for regeneration, which will incorporate a number of social housing developments.
