History of Chelmsford
In 1801 Chelmsford had a population of nearly 3,800 today is estimated the population of Chelmsford has grown to 102,400. The population quadrupled at around the time of the 19th Century.
Railway lines reached Chelmsford in 1843 and with this new improved method of communication an increase in Chelmsford economy surely followed.
Chelmsford built a renowned engineering industry and in the late 19th century for an industry making electrical equipment, most importantly Marconi set up the first radio factory. The history of Marconi in Chelmsford can still be seen today in the local museum.

Other improvements in the 19th Century included gas street lighting from 1819 and in 1818 the first Chelmsford chemist shop opened where poorer people were given free medicines.
Even with these improvements Chelmsford was still dirty and an outbreak of cholera took hold in 1832. Things finally improved from 1850 when sewers were finally dug.
