The London probate office is the principle registry, HM Courts and Tribunals service information is provided and full contact details can be found at the bottom of this page.
Probate Applications
If you've been appointed as an administrator or named as executor of a will, you'll need to apply for a Grant of Representation through the registry. This document gives you the legal authority to act on behalf of the deceased. If you haven't yet submitted your application, why not get a quote from specialist probate and estate administrators at IWC? We can handle the entire process for a low, fixed fee which is not based on the value of the estate.
Obtaining Copies of Records
Probate records are public documents. If you have any concerns, it is possible to find out whether or not a grant has been issued and to whom and obtain copies of all documentation, including the will. You may be a beneficiary concerned about the validity of a will or perhaps you believe you've been named in a will but have not heard anything. In these cases it is also possible to enter in a standing search, this will inform you when an application for probate is made.
Disputes
Although it's possible to prevent probate being issued by entering in a caveat to the registry, the office only deals with non-contentious probate. In cases where there is a dispute about the validity of a will or entitlement to apply for a grant, you'll need to seek legal advice.
Genealogy Research
The probate registry London is the only place where members of the public can search the complete National Probate Index dating back to 1858. Records include copies of wills proved and letters of administration which is a great source of information for genealogists.
